Operating principleĪlthough the pop rivet guns in this article have different forms, their functions are very similar. Read our rivet-type article to learn more about the various types and uses of rivets. However, solid rivets are more suitable when safety and reliability are crucial. For example, a pop rivet is typical in DIY projects because it is strong enough for most small projects. Different rivets have different applications. There are many types of rivets made of varying materials (e.g., plastic, aluminum, and steel). Long nose riveter: Long nose riveters (Figure 3 right middle) operate similarly to standard rivet guns, but have a longer nose piece for difficult to reach installation points.įigure 3: A lazy tong riveter (left), lever rivet gun (left middle), long nose riveter (right middle), and a standard rivet gun (right) Rivet types.Pushing and pulling the handle towards and away from the nose piece works the tool. Lazy tong riveter: Lazy tong riveters (Figure 3 left) have a latticed framework. The handles provide extra leverage, allowing the installation of larger rivets. The handles squeeze together to operate the tool. Heavy-duty lever riveter: A heavy-duty lever riveter (Figure 3 left middle) is a long riveting tool with a nose piece, jaw assemblage, and two handles. This action causes the jaw assemblage behind the nose piece to pull on the mandrel until it falls off. A user holds the front handle in one hand and pushes the back handle towards the front handle. These tools typically have a nose piece that deforms blind rivets by pulling a mandrel to deform the rivet body. Standard rivet gun: Standard rivet guns (Figure 3 right) are the most common riveting tools due to their availability and ease of use. These different riveters have different operations. There are a few types of manual pop rivet tools: standard rivet gun, heavy-duty lever riveter, lazy tong riveter, and long nose riveter. Prolonged use of a manual rivet tool causes hand pain. However, choose a pneumatic or electric riveting tool for larger riveting jobs. It is an ideal tool for small riveting jobs because it is ready to use without setup. What is a manual rivet tool?Ī manual rivet tool is a handheld tool that installs a rivet using manpower rather than compressed air or electricity. Check that the sheets of metal are joined, and that the rivet is secure, and then try again on another part of the sheet.Figure 2: Basic rivets: a steel shaft with one flanged end. You can then fit another pop rivet in exactly the same way, or you can choose to smooth down your rivet, in order to get rid of any sharp edges caused when the pin broke away. You can then turn the tool around, and watch it spit out the pin. Once the pin has broken, the manual pop rivet gun will pull free of the rivet and hole. This is the breaking of the pin, and indicates that the rivet is secured to the metal sheets. Repeat until you hear a popping noise from the end of the gun. Release the handle, and ensure that the tool is tight to the top of the rivet, and then pull the handle again. Push down, and pull the handle of the rivet gun until you feel resistance. ![]() Make sure that the rivet comes through both sheets of metal at once (you may wish to look underneath and check), and is not impeded. Push the head of the rivet through the holes in the sheets of metal. ![]() ![]() Release the trigger so that the rivet is held in place. Your rivet should have the pin facing towards the back of the gun, with the head extended between the teeth. Push the metal rivet into the tool as far as possible, so that the rivet is resting on a chuck at the back of the gun. Take your rivet in one hand, and with the other press the trigger, so the holding arms are open. Put two sheets of metal side-by-side and overlap holes so that you can fit the rivet. These can be ready-drilled, or you can make small holes in them using a drill. Rivets are made of light metal, and can sometimes break, so it is a good idea to be fully protected. Before you do anything else, you should put on your safety gloves and glasses.
